Overview
The Danfoss GBC 16s is a manually operated, full-port refrigeration shut-off ball valve with a 5/8 in. ODF (Outside Diameter Fitting) sweat connection on both ends. It belongs to Danfoss's mature GBC series, which uses laser-welded brass bodies, stainless steel balls, PTFE seats, and a double O-ring spindle seal to deliver low-loss isolation in liquid, suction, and hot gas lines across a wide range of fluorinated and mildly flammable (A2L/A3) refrigerants. The 009L8053 variant specifically ships with an integrated access port (Schrader-style, 7/16-20 UNF thread), enabling pressure measurement, refrigerant charging, and system evacuation without the need for additional tees or access fittings.
A quarter turn of the spindle moves the valve from fully open to fully closed, with hard rotation stops at both endpoints. A visual ball-status indicator on the top of the spindle lets a technician confirm valve state at a glance without having to feel for line pressure. The internally-loaded, rupture-proof spindle design ensures the spindle cannot be ejected under pressure — a critical safety attribute for high-pressure refrigerants such as R-410A and R-32. The valve body is drilled and tapped (M4 × 0.7) for optional bracket or panel mounting, and the one-piece wire seal cap meets European Safety Directive EN 378.
This valve is well suited for any refrigeration or air conditioning circuit where a durable, field-serviceable isolation point with integrated access is needed in a compact form factor. Typical platforms include cold rooms, chillers, heat pumps, and transport refrigeration systems. It is a practical choice for Kippkitts assembly builds calling for a solder-in shutoff on 5/8 in. copper line sets, offering a clean installation with no threading or compression fittings required. This is the standard GBC (45 bar series) rated to +100 °C; for hot-gas or oil-free applications above 80 °C, the GBC E series (49 bar, +150 °C) should be specified instead.

Access Port / Service Port
The 009L8053 includes a Schrader-type access port (position 13 in the Danfoss component diagram) with a 7/16-20 UNF cap thread and a stainless steel Schrader valve core conforming to DIN 7756 / DIN 7757. The access port cap is brass with a one-piece wire seal per EN 378 to prevent unintentional removal between service intervals.
The port supports standard refrigeration manifold gauges and quick-connect service hose fittings. The Schrader valve is replaceable; Danfoss spare Schrader valves are available under code 009L7213 (industrial pack of 10). The port is rated to the same 45 bar / 650 psig MWP as the valve body.
Integration Notes
- Solder installation: Copper stub ends are extended for standard solder/braze-in installation. Keep the valve body cool during brazing — wrap with a wet rag or heat sink — to protect the PTFE seats and O-ring seals. Danfoss recommends nitrogen purge during brazing to prevent oxide formation inside the valve.
- Orientation: Bi-directional flow; the valve can be installed in either direction and in any orientation (horizontal, vertical, at any angle). No preferred mounting direction.
- Panel mounting: The body is drilled and tapped M4 × 0.7 on both sides for bracket mounting. Danfoss bracket kit 009G7084 is compatible with GBC 16s.
- Valve position indicator: The flat on the spindle top indicates ball position — flat parallel to the pipe = open; flat perpendicular = closed. Confirm position visually before isolating a circuit under pressure.
- Rotation stops: Hard stops at fully open and fully closed prevent over-rotation and ball seat damage. Do not force the spindle past either stop.
- Seal cap: The one-piece wire seal cap must be replaced after each service access. Replacement cap kits are available as Danfoss 009L7210 (6-pack, compatible with GBC 16s–22s).
- Oil compatibility: GBC (not GBC E) is compatible with POE, PVE, PAG, PAO, and mineral oils. For oil-free applications, maximum media temperature is 80 °C; above 80 °C in oil-free service, specify the GBC E series (009L9053 with access port).
- R-290 / flammable refrigerant use: This valve is approved for R-290 (propane) per EN ISO 80079-36 ignition source assessment. Follow applicable safety standards for installation, leak detection, and ventilation when using A3 refrigerants.
- UL 60335-2-89/40: If your application falls under this standard, contact Danfoss directly for UL approval status before use.
